While the holidays can be joyous, they can also be stressful for families who do not have extra finances for that special dinner, to give their loved ones the shoes or clothes they need, and/or to pay for necessities, such as medical bills and home furnishings. Thanks to the Rio Verde/Tonto Verde Communities for sponsoring many of Unlimited Potential's low-income families and making their Christmas a little brighter. Your generosity is overwhelming!

Message from the Executive Director
Dear Friend of Unlimited Potential,
I hope your new year is off to a sensational start! It is hard to believe that I am already half way into my first year at the agency. I am really impressed with the progress the families at Unlimited Potential are making. The adult literacy classes are full and the mothers are moving forward in learning English. They speak to me in English and I have had the opportunity to practice my Spanish. Together, we are learning.
The children, too, are learning. I often hear them singing in both English and Spanish. As they leave for the day, under the watchful eye of their mothers, some of the children sneak into my office and "borrow" my candy. I enjoy these brief opportunities to connect with them.
At Unlimited Potential we remain committed to creating a learning environment that is caring and family-centered. First year adult literacy teacher, Sandra Amarillas, continues to put together monthly family outings that foster a sense of community. Fortunately, I was able to participate in this year's Christmas celebration. Desert Schools Federal Credit Union supplied and served a fabulous dinner that allowed us to feast together, and Mountain View Presbyterian Church's Choir dazzled us with songs of the season.
Ingrained in my memory is the vision of a young boy around ten who sat in the front row listening to the choir. He did not move throughout the performance and each time they tried to end their singing he would say "one more, one more" to which Kay Randolph, the choir director, would say "okay, one more." In all there must have been about five once mores.
The Christmas celebration is just one of many moving events that remind me daily of how blessed I am to be working amongst such genuinely beautiful people. I wholeheartedly look forward to the second half of the year.
| Sincerely, |

Program Update: The Motheread/Fatheread Program
UP recently introduced the nationally recognized Motheread/Fatheread Program. Ten mothers are participating in this program, where we read different children's books weekly.
We talk about the message of the book, about the types of questions mothers can ask their children to engage them in the story, and we practice changing our tone of voice and facial expressions to bring the characters in the book alive.
The mothers participate in activities that they can do with their children at home to promote the joy of reading. For example, after reading "Pablo's Tree," by Pat Mora, the mothers made a family tree. When we read "A Gift from Papá Diego," the mothers recounted the story of their children's birth, which they could then tell their children.
Weekly, the mothers share their experiences in reading with their children and together they are establishing family rituals inclusive of reading.

Changing Lives Through Knowledge
|
I am a student in the first year English class provided by Unlimited Potential. I am very glad to see that there are still programs like this one that have an authentic interest in the community.
The mothers can bring their children and Unlimited Potential kindly provides teachers to educate the children while the mothers have the opportunity to study. Also, this program provides computer classes. In another very instructive program, the leadership program, we learn the importance of our participation, of our becoming part of the solution for our community.
All these programs are very valuable for each and every student at Unlimited Potential. They are provided to us at no cost, completely free to every student. I would like to give special thanks to those who donate their finances in favor of education. They are making a huge contribution, changing lives through education and knowledge.
